Library Catalog Tip - Customizing Your Search

When I'm working at the reference desk, I'm often asked if there is a list of all the DVDs the library owns, or perhaps all the CD books by a particular author.

For the first example, all DVDs the library owns, you can use the wildcard (*) search and limit by the material type:

  1. Go the Advanced Search page (see drop-down menu of More Searches on upper right of the catalog and select Advanced Search, click green arrow)
  2. In the Enter Search Terms section, in the first field (Any Field), put an asterisk (*)
  3. In the Add Limits section, under Material Type, highlight DVD VIDEO
  4. Hit the Submit key
For the second example, a list of all CD books by a particular author, you can do the following:
  1. Go the Advanced Search page (see drop-down menu of More Searches on upper right of the catalog and select Advanced Search, click green arrow)
  2. In the Enter Search Terms section, in the first field (Any Field), put the author's last name, first (i.e., Child, Lee) and change "Any Field" to AUTHOR
  3. In the Add Limits section, under Material Type, scroll down and highlight CD BOOKS
  4. Hit the Submit key
